Hunting

Archery season opens the first week of September and runs through the middle of October. This is one of the most exciting times to hunt elk. Cold nights bring the bulls into rut and they can be bugled into close range. Elk and other big game animals have not been pressured by other hunters and can be found at lower elevations following their normal patterns. Exceptional trophies are taken during archery season. Bulls are often bugled to within 30 yards or less. Weather conditions at this time of year are relatively mild and ideal for hunting. We also have a special "archery only" area known for trophy bulls. We have years of bow hunting experience and our guides are bow hunters who know what it takes to get you close to game.

Rifle season opens the last week of October and closes the end of November. Winter snows begin to push game down from the higher elevations. Thunder Bow Outfitters- Hunting, Fishing, Water Adventures, and other Summer or Winter activitiesDeer and Sheep are in rut and easier to hunt. Fresh snow makes it possible to track deer and elk. Resident and migrating elk can be found moving in the canyons we hunt and the quality of game in unsurpassed. Mountain lion hunts are conducted the 1st part of December.

We limit the number of hunters to each camp, depending on the area we are hunting. We supply one guide for two hunters. Trophy hunts (one hunter per guide) are available for all species at an additional cost.

Back country camps are located in canyons three to ten miles from the nearest road and are reached by horseback or foot only. Base camp is operated out of canvas wall tents located on a steam or lake. Clients' tents are equipped with cots for sleeping, a wood stove for heat and lantern. A cook tent is also erected and supplied with wood and cook stoves, table, lanterns, etc. This tent also serves as a meeting place for the camp. Most hunting is done on foot from base camp. Horses are used to reach distant areas and to pack out game. Our guides are licensed and knowledgeable outdoorsman. They are experienced with the game and their habits and know our area well. Your guide will not hunt in competition with you and he will not kill game for you.

(Deer and Elk Licenses are guaranteed with Outfitter)

For those hunters who would like a back country unguided hunt, we offer a "drop camp hunt". You and your gear will be packed in on horseback by one of our guides to a pre-arranged campsite. Upon arriving, your guide will show you how to use the camp equipment and where the best areas to hunt are on a topographical map. No horses will be left at camp. Your guide will return at pre-arranged time to pack you, your gear and any game back to the trailhead.

FOR DROP CAMP HUNTS, WE SUPPLY

  • Canvas Wall Tent
  • Water Buckets
  • Food (optional)
  • Lanterns
  • Shovel
  • Ax and Saw
  • Wood and Cooking Stoves
  • Pots, Pans, Utensils
  • Cots

Arrangements may also be made to drop you and YOUR equipment in an area to be picked up at a prearranged time and destination.

Spring Bear Hunts

May is the best month for hunting bear. At this time of year, the bears emerge from hibernation and can be seen on the lower slopes below the snowcapped peaks. Because of the deep snow over the high mountains, bears are forced to feed between the valley bottoms and the snow line. Fresh out of hibernation, their ravenous appetites force them to look for food almost constantly. Because of these factors, bears can be found in a very limited area for a short time.

We hunt mountainside meadows, clear-cuts, avalanche slides and valley bottoms where bears can be found feeding on spring grasses, buds, grubs and winter kills. Bears are usually found by glassing these areas and a careful stalk is made taking terrain and wind direction into consideration. All hunts are strictly fair chase. Black bears in all colors phases is our specialty - brown, blonde, cinnamon and chocolate are frequently seen.
